These plug-ins and effects are bleeding edge and are not expected to work perfectly. However you CAN try them out. There are instructions for Ubuntu Feisty on forums.opencompositing.com Take a look at the first generation videos of Beryl + Compiz works (AKA Vista’s Demise) here if you haven’t seen it yet.

Anybody who has used a Linux distro knows that downloading and installing from an ISO is only the first part of a very long journey. After you have successfully installed the OS (which is sometimes difficult in its self) you need to add your apps, wifi / bluetooth support (WPA is always a b!tC7H), your utilities, iPod support, video playback codecs and more.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could have all of these apps and more installed right from your ISO? Well that is what Ubuntu Unlimited Edition does. Here is a short list of some of the installed software:

# Subversion & build tools
# Wireless Internet integration
# Bluetooth integration
# PPP integration
# Networking tools
# IPod support
# Beryl
# Mplayer, VLC, Songbird & Amarok players with mp3 support
# Mencoder, K9Copy, DeVeDE, DVD Shrink – dvd copying software.
# Integrated Nvidia drivers (will work with other cards)
# Samba
# NFS
# SMP Support (dual core CPUS) / works with single core as well
# 100′s of Ubuntu updates
# …….. a lot more

Well have a look at the latest release of Ubuntu Unlimited 1.3

If you haven’t been paying too much attention to all the Open Source excitement surrounding the more recent developments to the XGL the X server video architecture then your really missing out.

Here is a quick low down:

XGL is an X server (X Windows) architecture designed to take advantage of modern graphics cards via their OpenGL drivers, layered on top of OpenGL via glitz

Kiba-Dock is a xgl dock with physics. Need I say more?

Combine these 2 amazing advancements with todays most popular Linux distro Ubuntu and you get some serious power. Keep in mind that your graphics card needs to support hardware acceleration in order to get the most out of this wicked combo. Most cards today are capable of handling XGL / Compiz / Glitz and so on…

Without further a due… the ultimate demo video of the above configuration:

<youtube>bYsxaMyFV2Y</youtube>

How to Install XGL/BERYL for ATI Xpress 200
How to: Kiba-dock
How to: Nvidia 32bit / Compiz / XGL

Have fun and good luck! Im’ off to setup my other lappy with the above config. If only wireless support was better under Linux… Damn you WPA why do you have to be so prevalent?!

In the ongoing war to become the ultimate desktop OS Google is preparing its own distribution called Goobuntu. The Linux desktop based on the newly popular Linux distribution called Ubuntu which means “humanity to others” in several African languages, including Zulu and Xhosa.

Google has confirmed it is working on a desktop linux project called Goobuntu, but declined to supply further details, including what the project is for. It is possible that this is just a Googleplex specific platform for their engineers though there is a lot of speculation that Google plans to distribute it to the general public, as a free alternative to Windows.

If Google really decides to make that giant leap into the desktop market I really feel that they are going to have to come up with a better solution than a “Debian like” Linux distro running Gnome if they are going to comepete with Apple’s Mac OS X or Microsoft’s Windows XP or their upcoming Vista platform.

Whatever Google’s intentions, the input from Google engineers and developers whom are writing new features and fixing bugs, will be a huge boost to the Ubuntu project.

You can find more news here.
